“Having two boys is like having dogs….” - A quote from my sister, mother of two boys – followed by “They need to be fed, watered and thoroughly exercised or it all goes a bit wrong!”
Way back then, as a naive mother of a tiny baby, I didn’t really quite get this, and thought it was just her two truly unruly boys running rings around her… she did stick to her mantra, (and was very fit and slim) – and the boys went on to take up fencing, and swimming with aplomb!
So, now my two boys are eight and nine, I NOW know she was right – however it’s not always possible to get out of the house to the park, if it’s chucking it down in this often inclement British weather. So we’ve built sofa dens, played with lego, and have now discovered a love for Monopoly – this however doesn’t tick the ‘physical exercise’ box – which is where Judy Murray‘s fantastic set4sport scheme to encourage any games you make-up at home – see her Set4Sport Facebook page, and videos on the ‘Wall of Play’ – Judy really likes to see how we adapt the games and create new ones ourselves!
We were lucky enough to meet Judy recently (at London Zoo of all places), the boys were in awe, (and loved Judy’s Scottish accent) – it’s Andy Murray’s Mum! – And thoroughly inspired too, so much so that before school this week, we’ve had several games of SITTING ROOM TENNIS, using pile of cushions as the net, soft squidgy soft toys as balls, and some ping pong bats, great fun, but time to get the school shoes on boys!
So grab your cereal packets, skipping ropes, and soft balls, and invent some indoor games!
Do go and like the #Set4Sport Facebook page and website. Also when you tweet do use #Set4Sport, they’d love to spread the word
